About Don

Don Davies is the Member of Parliament for Vancouver Kingsway. He was first elected in 2008, and was re-elected in 2011 and 2015.

Don serves as the NDP Critic for Health. Prior to his current post, Don served as Official Opposition Critic for International Trade, Official Opposition Critic for Citizenship and Immigration and Multiculturalism, and NDP Critic for Public Safety and National Security.

Don is active in a number of parliamentary caucuses and groups. He is Co-Chair of the Global Health Caucus, the Parliamentary Friends of the UN, the Canada-Hungary Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Canada-Slovakia Parliamentary Friendship Group. Don is an Executive Member of the Canada-Europe Parliamentary Association, the Canada-China Parliamentary Association, the Canadian Section of the ParlAmericas Parliamentary Association and is a Delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Don is also a member of the Canada-Philippines Inter-Parliamentary Group, the Canada-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group, the Canada-China Legislative Association and the Canadian Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Before joining Parliament in 2008, Don worked as a lawyer, labour representative, and policy advisor. He was the Director of Legal Resources for Teamsters Canada (Local 31) from 1992 to 2008. From 1989 to 1991, he worked as Executive Assistant (Policy and Communications) to the Leader of the Official Opposition of Alberta.

Throughout his career, Don has worked with private sector businesses to improve their human resources practices and served on many public bodies dealing with occupational health and safety, employment standards, and transportation policy.

His education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Degree in Law.

Don is a long-time resident of the Kensington area of Vancouver Kingsway. He has been active in many community groups, including Tools for Peace, Co-op Radio, Lawyers for Social Responsibility, La Quena Cooperative, the Meridian Cultural Society, the Mount Pleasant Parent Advisory Council and the Dickens Community Group.

He has been married for 32 years to Sheryl Palm, a Speech Pathologist at BC Children’s Hospital. They have three children and a granddaughter.

Interesting Facts:

  • Don has hosted ‘Create Your Canada’ seven times, a program to involve youth in politics. The winning high school students are flown to Ottawa and watch in the House of Commons as their idea is introduced as an actual Bill in Parliament by Don
  • Among the 338 MPs in the House of Commons, Don ranks in the top 5 for the number of Private Members Bills introduced
  • Don led the Parliamentary inquiry into civil rights violations at the G20 summit in Toronto
  • Don accompanied the Governor General on the 2013 Official State Visit to China, meeting both President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang
  • Don visited the Philippines in May 2010 to serve as a national election observer and Vietnam in 2016 to tour global health projects
