Don: Cancel Racist Gathering in Vancouver

VANCOUVER – MP Don Davies (Vancouver Kingsway) today called on the City of Vancouver to do everything it its power to cancel the rally planned by the Worldwide Coalition Against Islam (WCAI) and the Cultural Action Party (CAP) on Saturday.

“It is clear that this event’s organizers are motivated by what just happened in Charlottesville,” Davies said.  “They intend on spreading hatred and inciting violence, and we must send a strong and clear message that this will not be tolerated in our community.”

Davies empathized with the difficult position the City is in.

“I wholly respect the right of citizens to gather peacefully and express their views,” Davies said. “But these are criminal acts, and I believe the City has the right and an obligation to enforce the law and protect all citizens before someone gets hurt.”

Davies said it is important that elected officials and community leaders express clear denunciations of those fomenting hatred against identifiable groups.

“We need to call these people and their ideas what they are:  racist, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, homophobic and misogynist,” Davies said.  “There is no place in our society for them, and we need to back up that sentiment with action.”
