Dear Mayor Robertson and Councillors:

Re: Odd Fellows Manor Redevelopment

As the Member of Parliament for Vancouver Kingsway, I am writing to convey my support for the redevelopment of the Odd Fellows Manor, located at 3595 Kingsway.

Having been the Member of Parliament for this area since 2008, I am very familiar with the Odd Fellows Low Rental Housing Society and the great work they have done to provide housing for low-income seniors. The building they currently occupy is in desperate need of redevelopment to keep its tenants safe and healthy for many years to come.

The Society, Three Links Care Society and the development partners Terra Special Projects & Hungerford Properties have been working with the City of Vancouver to ensure that the project moves forward. The proposed development seeks to keep the current number of 44 units dedicated to seniors and add 117 new market-rental units, as well as provide retail space on the ground floor facing Kingsway.

I support this plan. However, I also believe that it can and should be more ambitious.

Vancouver is facing a housing crisis of historical proportions, and the need for affordable housing for all demographics, particularly seniors, is critical. Accordingly, simply replacing the 44 affordable units with the same number of said units represents a lost opportunity to provide much-needed housing for a very vulnerable population. I would like to see an increase to this number.

My support is also conditional upon the 44 affordable units being offered first to all current tenants and remaining truly affordable (that is, at or very near the current rent).

If you have any questions or require anything further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Don Davies
Member of Parliament, Vancouver Kingsway
